Terms of use

Last reviewed:

These are the terms on which Check My Letter is made available at checkmyletter.co.uk. They are short because the site is simple: it is free to read, there is nothing to sign up for, and nothing to buy. Using the site means accepting what follows.

What this site is

General information about common UK penalty and enforcement letters, written in plain English and checked against the issuing bodies’ own published guidance. Every page names its sources and shows the date it was last reviewed.

What it is not

It is not legal advice, and it does not create any adviser–client relationship between you and the site or its owner. It is not a substitute for guidance from the authority that issued your letter, from Citizens Advice, or from a qualified adviser. It cannot take account of your circumstances, because it does not know them. The disclaimer sets this out in full and forms part of these terms.

Accuracy and change

Real care goes into the figures here, and no figure is published unless it was taken directly from an official source. Even so, penalties, fees and procedures change, official pages are rewritten, and errors are possible. Where an official source disagrees with anything on this site, the official source is right and this site is out of date.

No promise is made that the site is complete, current or uninterrupted, and pages may be changed or removed at any time without notice.

Liability

You use the information here at your own discretion. To the fullest extent the law allows, the site and its owner are not liable for any loss arising from reliance on it — including a missed deadline, an unsuccessful challenge, or a penalty that increases.

Nothing in these terms limits or excludes liability for death or personal injury caused by negligence, for fraud or fraudulent misrepresentation, or for anything else that cannot lawfully be limited or excluded. Your statutory rights as a consumer are unaffected.

Pages here link to GOV.UK, the NHS Business Services Authority, TV Licensing, tribunals and other official bodies, because you should be able to check the source rather than take this site’s word for it. Those sites are outside our control and have their own terms and privacy policies. A link is not an endorsement, and no responsibility is taken for their content or availability.

Using the content

  • You may read, print and share pages for your own use, and quote from them with a link back.
  • You may not republish the content wholesale, or present it as your own.
  • You may not use it to provide a paid advisory service, or in any way that implies this site endorses or is connected with you.
  • Automated bulk copying of the site is not permitted.

Where a page quotes or summarises official guidance, the underlying material belongs to the body that published it, and Crown copyright material is used on the terms of the Open Government Licence.

Advertising

This site may carry advertising to cover its running costs. Adverts are supplied by an advertising network and are not selected, checked or endorsed by this site. Nothing advertised here is a recommendation, and no advertiser has any influence over what the pages say. See the privacy policy for how advertising cookies are handled and how to refuse them.

Governing law

These terms are governed by the law of England and Wales, and the courts of England and Wales have jurisdiction over any dispute. If part of these terms is found unenforceable, the rest continues to apply.
